Things to Bring to a Pilates Class
You might be wondering do you have to bring it to Pilates class. Well, you don’t have to bring much. Pilates studios provide the equipment for their students.Â
However, you may still choose to bring your own mat (for mat Pilates classes). Also, remember to bring a water bottle. While you won’t be sweating much as compared to other exercises, it’s good to stay hydrated.Â
Pilates Class Attire: What to wear for Pilates Classes?
Most Pilates classes are very casual. So, you can wear whatever you find comfortable for you. However, here are some general guidelines when choosing what to wear.Â
- Choose stretchy over baggy. Well-fitted breathable stretchy clothes are preferred. It helps your instructor see your posture.Â
- Tie your hair. If your hair is long, you may want to keep it away from your face.Â
- Remove your jewelry and accessories as they may get stuck into the springs of the equipment.Â
- Avoid clothes that can get caught up on the reformer machine. Tassels or ribbons may accidentally get into the springs. So, you want to avoid these on your clothes.Â
- Clothes with embellishments like beads, zippers, and huge buttons can damage Pilates equipment.Â
Note: Every studio is different. So, it’s still best to check with the studio if you’re having second thoughts.Â
Mat and reformer Pilates
Before starting your Pilates classes, you may want to familiarize yourself with some of the equipment you will be using.Â
For mat Pilates, most of the exercises are done on the floor with minimum equipment. If you want to buy your own mat, make sure that you choose the right one. A Pilates mat is different from a yoga mat – which is thinner. Mat Pilates is usually recommended for beginners.Â
On the other hand, reformer Pilates uses various equipment such as the Reformer, Wunda chair, and Cadillac. Reformer classes can be more challenging than mat Pilates classes.
Understanding the difference between these two can help you choose the right class to join depending on your level.Â
Pilates Classes: Points to Remember
If you want to get off on the right foot, here are some other pointers you should keep in mind.Â
- Arrive on time. Showing up on time is expected for all kinds of meetings including your Pilates classes. It shows that you respect everybody’s time.Â
- Do your warm-up. Nothing beats a good warm-up when it comes to any exercise. The same is true for Pilates classes. A little bit of stretching before the class can help soften up your stiff muscles and avoid mishaps.Â
- Â
- Show up. If you booked a class with the studio, be sure to show up. The spot will be reserved only for you. If you can’t make it, inform the studio in advance to give other students the chance.Â
- Inform your instructor of any injuries. Instructors usually ask about your general health condition before the start of the class. However, make sure to inform them if you are feeling any pain or discomfort. If you’re having neck or back pain, it’s best to let your instructor know.Â
- You can ask questions. It’s normal to have a lot of questions especially when you’re just starting your Pilates class. However, you may want to ask your instructor at the end of the class to avoid disrupting the flow of exercises.Â
